In Florence, the new Opera del Duomo Museum recently opened its doors.
It’s an exhibition space divided into 25 halls on three floors, and housing 750 works.
The museum has the world’s largest concentration of monumental Florentine sculpture, with Renaissance and medieval statues and relief in marble, bronze and silver, from masters of the period like Michelangelo, Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Andrea Pisano, Antonio del Pollaiolo, Luca della Robbia and Andrea del Verrocchio.
One of the most important developments in the museum’s new layout is the spectacular Hall of the Ancient Fecade - inside, it houses a spectacular look at both the monumental bronze and gold doors created for the Florence Baptistery between 1330 and 1452 and at the reconstruction of the fecade of the Duomo by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296, which was never finished and was ultimately destroyed in 1587.
The new museum also holds Michelangelo’s Pietà, Donatello’s La Maddalena, and the beautiful choir lofts by Donatello and Luca della Robbia.
On the top floor you’ll find the gallery dedicated to Giotto’s belltower, with the 54 panels that once adorned it.
The visit concludes with a step out on to a panoramic terrace with a view of Brunelleschi’s dome.
