Montecatini Terme is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Tettuccio spa: a rare pearl of liberty style
Montecatini Terme enters the Unesco heritage list.
The proclamation took place during the 44th extended session of the World Heritage Committee, scheduled to run until July 27 in Fuzhou, China. A result that testifies once again to the extraordinary richness of the cultural and naturalistic heritage of our country.
In addition to the 57 sites registered on the World Heritage list, Italy has 14 inscriptions on the representative list of the intangible heritage of humanity.
Montecatini Terme, said the Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni, "is an example of a unique Italian thermal system, to be protected and enhanced".
Montecatini Terme has been included in the "Great Spas of Europe" circuit, as part of a transnational candidacy promoted by Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, as well as Italy.
This transnational serial ownership includes 11 spa towns in 7 different countries: Baden Bei Wien (Austria); Spa (Belgium); Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Láznê and Mariánskè Làznê (Czech Republic); Vichy (France); Bad-Ems, Baden-Baden and Bad-Kissingen (Germany); Montecatini Terme (Italy); Bath (UK).
The series includes the most fashionable, dynamic and international spa towns among the hundreds of them that have contributed to the phenomenon of European thermalism. Although each spa town is different, they all developed around mineral water sources, which were a catalyst for a model of spatial organization aimed at healing, therapeutic, recreational and social functions. The ensembles of the thermal buildings include baths, refreshment rooms, rooms for drinking the thermal waters, treatment facilities and colonnades, all conceived to use the thermal sources in a practical way, both for balneotherapy and for mineral water therapy.
The "Take care", internally and externally, was completed by the exercise and social activities requiring adequate facilities for visitors, such as assembly halls, casinos, theaters, residences and related infrastructures (from water pipeline systems, to the production of salts, up to the railways and funiculars).
All this was integrated into an overall urban complex including a recreational and therapeutic environment made up of parks, gardens, avenues, sports facilities and woods, carefully managed. Buildings and spaces are visually and physically connected with their surrounding landscapes, which are regularly used for healing therapy, relaxation and entertainment.
